Year 2 have been practicing their programming skills with the roamers. This culminated in 5 teams competing to get their roamer around the total roamer wipeout zone. Well done to the winning team – Super Mario Brothers.
The generosity of our pupils, staff and parents, during this week’s appeal has been overwhelming and will make a real difference to some of the survivors of earthquake torn Haiti.
Together, we have exceeded our target, meaning four ShelterBoxes will be sent to Haiti on behalf of the children at Vallajeelt.
One of our core values is ‘Caring’ and as expected, our school community certainly demonstrated their compassion for the people of Haiti by what they have done. As one child put it – “it feels good to help”.
Donations ranging from children’s pocket money to an anonymous donor of £500, were crucial in helping the school raise a staggering £2144.53, in less than a week! The initiative shown by children to organise cake and toy stalls, a raffle, a sponsored skip, together with a contribution from the Friends’ Association were welcome additions to our fundraising efforts.
ShelterBox are amazed at the size and speed in which monies were raised and wanted to pass on their thanks, to the children, parents and staff. They have ‘fast tracked’ our donation ensuring it goes to the people of Haiti.
Any further donations received will now go direct to the DEC appeal on behalf of the children at Vallajeelt.
The appeal has begun well for children, parents and staff to raise £1000 by Friday, which will enable us to to send two ShelterBoxes to help the survivors of the Haiti Earthquake.
Some children have taken it upon themselves to raise money through some events they are organising. Amy, Lauren, Ciara, Rebecca and Hana will be holding a cake sale on Thursday after school. They will also be running a raffle- the prize being a go on a ‘real magic fire engine ‘with a friend!
Haiti was recently hit by a very large earthquake. To help the relief effort, children, staff and parents are invited to donate money towards some ‘ShelterBoxes’.
A relief charity uses the money we donate to put together boxes that contain all the essential items necessary for an extended family (up to 10 people) to live under shelter and be able to cook, wash and generally survive in the first few weeks and months that are so important when there is a major disaster.
Starting on Monday, we invite everyone to bring in a money donation to school. This will be totalled at the end of each day and the children informed, via the blog and school assemblies, on how much we as a school have raised towards a shelter box. Each box costs £490. Our target is to send two boxes from Scoill Vallajellt.
